Remote Desktop & RD Gateway

Purpose

The Remote Desktop Connection application provides remote access to a University resource.

Audience 

Faculty and Staff

Prerequisites

  • University computer must be powered ON.
  • Client must be in the Remote Desktop Users group or be an administrator on that device.

Important Notes

  • If no specific software housed on a University computer is needed, VPN access is recommended for remote work.
  • In the event of a natural disaster or loss of power on campus, users will be unable to access on-campus University resources.
  • If specific software housed on a University resource is needed, Remote Desktop Connection can be used, through VPN or the RD Gateway.

Identify the Full Computer Name of the Device to be Accessed

  1. Select Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Select About.
  5. Record the information listed in Device Name (ex. IT1234567)
  6. The device must be turned ON to access remotely.

Using Remote Desktop Connection with VPN

Access TAMU-CC desktop

  1. Engage VPN - Cisco AnyConnect to connect to the TAMUCC network.
  2. In the Windows search bar, type “Remote Desktop”.
  3. Select the Remote Desktop Connection application.
  4. Type the full computer name DeviceName.ad.tamucc.edu.
  5. When prompted for your credentials enter:
    1. “TAMUCC\” followed by your IslandID.
    2. Password.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Special Notes:
    1. If you are on a personal computer, you may need to select the Show choices option to enter your TAMUCC\IslandID and password.
    2. If you want to access your computer using RD Gateway go to the RD Gateway Setup instructions section, below.
  8. After entering your credentials, you may be prompted to verify the identity of the computer. Verify the computer name is correct.
  9. Select Yes.
  10. When a successful connection is made, the Computer Usage Policy Acceptance will display.
  11. Select OK to begin using the University workstation remotely.

RD Gateway

RD Gateway Setup

  1. After Step 6 above, select the Show Choices option.
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select the Connection SettingUse these RD Gateway server settings".
    1. Server name: rdgateway.tamucc.edu.
    2. Logon Method: Allow me to select later.
    3. Uncheck the “Bypass RD Gateway server for local address” check box.
  5. Select Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Select General tab.
  8. Select Save As.
  9. Use file name RDGateway.rdp.

Accessing RD Gateway

  1. In the Windows search bar, type “Remote Desktop”.
  2. Select the Remote Desktop Connection application.
  3. Select Show Options.
  4. Select Open.
  5. Locate and Select the rdgateway.rdp file on the computer.
  6. When prompted for your credentials enter:
    1. “TAMUCC\” followed by your IslandID and Password.
    2. Complete DUO authentication.
  7. If your computer is joined to the domain, rdgateway will pass your credentials. If not, you will also need to log in to your computer.
