VPN - Cisco AnyConnect

Purpose

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows secure internet access to restricted University resources. VPN allows users to map to a network or common drive while protecting sensitive or confidential information, including student academic, personal, and fiscal records.

Audience 

Faculty, Staff & Student Workers

Prerequisites

For Student Workers to have access, their supervisor will need to submit a ticket to itrequests@tamucc.edu, including the student worker’s name, IslandID, and the reason access is needed. 

Important Notes

Many University resources can be accessed from any computer without using VPN. It should only be used to access tools with additional security requirements.

Getting Started

Computer Download and installation of Cisco AnyConnect

  1. Open Cisco AnyConnect VPN Downloads page.
  2. If prompted, complete Duo two-factor authentication.
  3. Select and download the correct version of the Cisco AnyConnect VPN software.
    1. Select “Microsoft Windows” for the Windows version
    2. Select “Apple MacOS” for the MAC OS version
    3. Select “Linux” for the Linux version
  4. Open the file to install the program.
  5. If you receive a Security Warning dialog box, select Run to proceed.
  6. You will be directed through the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Set Up Wizard.
  7. Select Next.
  8. When prompted, select “I accept the terms in the License Agreement” and select Next.
  9. Select Install to begin installing the Cisco AnyConnect VPN software.
  10. If you receive the User Account Control warning, select Yes to continue installing.
  11. After the installation is complete, select Finish.

Using Cisco AnyConnect

Sign-in to Cisco AnyConnect

  1. Select Start > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
  2. Select or enter “vpn.tamucc.edu” in the dropdown menu.
  3. Select Connect.
  4. Enter your IslandID or TAMU-CC email address and password.
  5. In the Duo Security field using lower case letters, enter
    1. push”  for a push notification to your phone.
    2. “phone” to authenticate via a phone call.
    3. “sms” to send a new batch of SMS passcodes.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Your identity will be verified using Duo Two-Factor Authentication.
  8. Upon Duo verification completion select Accept to accept the Terms of Use.

Disconnecting Cisco AnyConnect

  1. Select Start > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
  2. Select Disconnect.
